Why vocabulary matters
A quick look at why teaching vocabulary is so important to all learners.
EAL vs SEN and factors which may affect progress
EAL and SEN are certainly not the same thing and this session looks at lots of reasons why an EAL child might not be making progress plus a look at red flags for when SEN might be playing a role.
Scaffolding and effective questioning
A 3 minute mini look at the importance of both scaffolding and effective questioning. Beth offers a full session looking at this if you want further training on it.
What is reading?
A short video that tackles the process of reading which early years children go through, but with consideration that EAL learners may be going through this when they are much older, for example in high school. It highlights the additional challenges an EAL learner will face and why reading for pleasure cannot happen until you are a good reader.

Brand new to EAL HUB – our mini series training videos! Bringing great EAL ideas and strategies to you in bitesize chunks. Ideal for when you have a few minutes to spare.
The “Pose, Pause, Pounce, Bounce” questioning technique is a valuable strategy for teaching and supporting EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners in the classroom. This technique can help EAL learners develop their language skills, build confidence, and improve their overall understanding of the subject matter. Here are some benefits of using this technique with EAL learners:
Benefits for EAL learners:
- Reduces anxiety: The “Pose, Pause, Pounce, Bounce” technique gives EAL learners time to process the question, think about their response, and gather their thoughts before answering. This can help reduce anxiety and make them feel more comfortable participating in the lesson.
- Encourages thoughtful responses: By pausing and bouncing the question, EAL learners (and ALL learners!) are encouraged to think more deeply about their response, leading to more thoughtful and considered answers. It gives time to code switch between languages.
- Develops critical thinking: This technique helps EAL learners develop critical thinking skills, as they are encouraged to evaluate the question, consider different perspectives, and provide evidence to support their answer.
- Fosters language development: It provides EAL learners with opportunities to practice their language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Builds confidence: As EAL learners become more comfortable with the technique, they are more likely to participate in class, share their ideas, and engage with their peers, which can help build their confidence and self-esteem.
By incorporating the “Pose, Pause, Pounce, Bounce” technique into your teaching practice, you can create a more supportive and inclusive learning environment that meets the diverse needs of EAL learners and helps them develop their language skills, build confidence, and feel part of the lesson.
